What’s the Hotwire website used for?

Whenever I tell anyone we booked a hotel room using Hotwire the first question I am asked is “What’s Hotwire?”

San Antonio RiverwalkAccording to Wikipedia the Hotwire.com website is a discount travel website that offers low prices on airfare, hotel, rental cars, and vacation packages by selling off unsold travel inventory at discounted prices.  That doesn’t really describe it very well at all.  If a hotel is not fully booked they let Hotwire.com know how many rooms they have available and through the website the rooms are then rented at a discount rate rather than letting them stay vacant.  We stayed in some really nice hotels with a 5 star rating for the cost of a 2 and 3 star hotel prices. It became a game with us as each day when we arrived in a new town, looking for a wifi connection and doing a search online for a room.  Read more about your trip to Texas here and here Lone Star State.

Disappointed in our hotel room

You enter the information needed letting them know the area you want to be in, the price range and amenities you need.  You are then given choices as to what is available and it’s up to you to make a decision.  You don’t find out the name of the hotel until you book and pay for it.  We were never disappointed except for once.  Most times we stayed in some pretty luxurious places.  The one time we had a problem we let Hotwire.com know of our disappointment and they refunded our money immediately.  Not in money but with a credit to our account to use for the next booking.

If you are needing a hotel room for more than one night in the same area then book how many days you want right at that time because after staying one night at the hotel you can’t get the same rate for an extended stay.  You can try, like we did but had to move to another hotel.  If we had realized we wanted to stay in that town for a few days we would have booked our room for the actual number of days we needed.

We used this system for 3 weeks in Texas as we made our way through Houston, Humble, Austin, San Antonio, Galveston and a few places in between.  We made a game out of it and had a lot of fun.  At the time wifi wasn’t as easy to find as it is today and that was part of the challenge we faced which put us into some interesting situations.  There’s no need to do it the way we did – for those who like to plan ahead then use the website to plan ahead for the length of time you need a room.

Discounted Car rentals

The other service we used it for was for renting a car  to tour around Texas for two weeks enjoying the sites and scenery and were really happy with the price. $11.95 per day rental cars with low Hotwire Hot-Rates!

Since that vacation I have recommended Hotwire.com to my friends and family and everyone who has used it has been just as happy as we are.  My son traveled from New York to Western Canada and used the service each night along the way.  It is the absolute first place we check whenever we need a room whether it’s in Vancouver, Nanaimo, Seattle or anywhere else in North America.  A friend of mine even found some great deals in Jamaica.  So the next time you need to book a room and want a discounted price consider using Hotwire.comfirst.

Happy travels,
